Making Layouts

For Phase 1 presentation, we were required to have all of the roughs of our layouts done. We were able to get a good number of layout artists on board with the project. Around the same time, we asked an Illustration student, Jasmine Saunders to be our art director. I wasn't able to get around to working on the visual development of my film back in ANIM 385. Despite the time crunch, Jasmine and I were able to come up with a style that best matched my film and my vision for it. Down below is the final image of Max's room design with the intended color palette. This was also done to help the layout artists get a good feel of the environment they are drawing.

Rough Layouts

Thanks to Collab fair, we were able to get the following artists to assist as layout artists : Alex Sellati, Saiya Lin, Michelle Rustagi, Stef English, Leo Distofano, Julliane Chute, Justine Benford.

The rough layout stage was very challenging. The works I received were rather underwhelming or did not match the style of the film and truthfully, it was entirely my fault. As a director, I failed to give my layout artists sufficient materials and reference to work from. To make the situation even worse, the animatic lacked detail in what the environment of each shot was supposed to look like. I scrambled to put together a floor map of Max's room for artists working on shots taking place in Max's room. All in all, I had to draw most of the layouts. Despite the shortcomings, we were able to get most of the layouts done.
