Establishing the look of the film

By phase 2, our layouts were to be fully painted and rendered to match the moodboard and the style I established for the film. This was an important time for me to out together a more cohesive styleguide for Jasmine to work off from so she could develop on the one I gave her.

Initially, she simply worked off from the moodbaord from my pitch packet from ANIM 385. At this point, the style we wanted wasn't fully clear and we were still trying to figure out what worked best. As a director, I narrowed down my choices to two stylistic influences- 101 Dalmations and Steven Universe.

Pictured below is the initial moodboard Jasmine made based on my moodboard. At this point, we have a wider variety of styles that look somewhat similar.

After narrowing down my choices, I made a style guide on the visual direction I wanted. It was not as comprehensive but it was enough for Jasmine to get a clearer idea on what I want.

In this style guide, I emphasized the quality of the line work I was looking for because some of the layout artists different brushes. Since we still had some more layouts that needed to be addressed, I took the chance to let them know the type of brush we need to use. Although, color wise my style guide comes short, I had faith in Jasmine to take this and develop it more based on our previous discussions on our stylistic influences. On top of that, I gave Jasmine one layout to paint based on our new direction and use it as a reference for other artists.

Picture below is a more precise moodboard Jasmine made that was intended for the artists to follow. On the right top is the layout Jasmine painted.

Submissions

The style guide thankfully helped the artists a lot because in this round, we started receiving better works. People were able to match the style very well. Below are some examples of finished layouts done by (in order) Justin Benford, Alex Sellati and Adisa Kareem.
